Today is Registered Dietitian’s Day®. This is a day that’s celebrated during National Nutrition Month® that highlights the work of the registered dietitian (RD) as part of the health care team and part of the food and nutrition industry.
What’s a dietitian?
- Dietitians minimally have Bachelor Degrees in nutrition, dietetics, or public health from accredited universities. Many also have advanced degrees.
- Dietitians translate the science of nutrition into practical advice for healthy living
- Dietitians facilitate healthy lifestyles by helping individuals make changes in behavior toward reducing disease risk to improve personal health
- Dietitian may work in a variety of settings including hospitals, long term care facilities, schools, food service, research, public relation firms, fitness centers, food corporations, or private practice
Everyone hears numerous messages via media every week about “what you should eat”. My goal is to help you sort through that information so that you can figure out how best for you to eat.
Perhaps you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, and your doctor has told you to “follow a diet”. If you’ve had trouble understanding what sort of dietary changes your doctor really wants you to make, then it may be time to see an RD. A registered dietitian can help you make changes in your diet to improve your existing conditions or prevent others. If everyone could “just eat”, we wouldn’t have the high incidence of obesity and disease…people need support. I’m convinced that RDs are underutilized! It’s okay to ask for help!
